The new water games

Universal has just opened a new generation water park in Orlando. Objective: compete with the giant Disney sites and enjoy the global success of these attractions, especially in Asia. Informed sledding in the thriving water park industry.

On the Costa del Sol, which would make the Riviera for a natural park, José Manzano has its small reputation, that come to confirm the accolades of young Andalusians tattooed, in Gucci caps and solar mirror. All summer, Jan-B - his stage name - turns in the nightclubs of the coast to mix the "retro break beat." But this Saturday in late May, he officiated in another setting: he opens the season of the Aqualand of Torremolinos with the Sun Coast Festival, electro music full of ears, feet in the wave pool. "It's very different from a nightclub, here it's sunny, you have the sun. people are more friendly, and the party lasts a very long time. "The toboggans were still carefully closed to avoid road exits. Monday morning, the vapors of "ganja" will have dissipated for the official opening of the season 2017 of the water park.

The "water park" is a bit like the pet: difficult to escape if you have a child under 10, especially if you spend the summer near the Mediterranean. Warm and sunny four months of the year, Spain, the south of France and Italy have taken advantage of their comparative advantage to multiply the aquatic attractions. "Our first competitor is the sea. But where there is the sea, there are people," says Michel Moenner, 35 years of passion for water parks and always at the head of the Aqualand Saint -Cyr-sur-Mer (Var). "It is the body that is at stake, the object of hedonistic rites: a place of pleasure and relaxation, always warm water, lush tropical vegetation, next to bars and restaurants"observes Isabelle Marc, author of a study on the rise of these places of rejoicing in Spain for the Research Center on Contemporary Spain (CREC). The towel thrown on the lawn in Kikuyu - a grass much more resistant than the turf -, the tummy tucked up and sunscreen well spread out, you are ready to face a day of family slides.

The profession this year has its eyes turned to America. More specifically Florida, historic cradle of water parks, where opened on May 25 Volcano Bay, the third Universal Park in Orlando. With a simple philosophy - "Water is life. Life is joy "- but claiming a conceptual jump: to stand out from simple water parks, Universal has built a" water theme park "- nuance. The bather does not just slide on a toboggan, he enters the legend of the peoples of Oceania. After touring the South Pacific, the Waturi tribe (meaning "watery") discovers Volcano Bay where Krakatau, the ardent god, sent his daughter Tai Nui to heaven, furious at his romance with young Kala. Remorseful, Krakatau turns into a 200-foot-high volcano and spits (fake) lava at night to reconcile heaven and earth. Meanwhile, the tears of Tai Nui filled the wave pool ..."Whenever we create a new attraction or new space, an incredible story is always our starting point , " Universal Creative's creative director, Dale Mason, who is working on the group's new concepts, said on his blog. . "The Americans understood that to compete, it was necessary to thematize. Investment in a park today is 50% in the slides and 50% in the theme. People must be out of their way when they arrive, they must be speechless, " decrypts Michel Moenner.

Universal to storm the Disney king

With Volcano Bay, Universal wants to challenge Disney, so far master of gender and storytelling. In Orlando, the latter owns Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach (the pitch: a snowstorm turned Florida into a ski resort ...), respectively number 2 and 3 in the world of water parks in terms of attendance. Universal does not want to reveal its ticketing goals or revenue forecasts, but Volcano Bay is also there to boost tickets to its two other Orlando theme parks, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. "Adding a second type of experience encourages longer stays, and attendance tends to climb. This is a popular trend among developers and park operators.says the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), which annually gathers the figures of the profession. With Volcano Bay, Universal discount nibble a few points of market share at Disney. Of the 438 million tickets sold worldwide last year by the ten world leaders in amusement parks, Disney still outclasses its challengers, with 32% of the cake (140 million visitors) last year, against 11% for Universal. In view of the first experiences identified after the opening of Volcano Bay, rigging was still needed, but Universal is definitely the entry into the world's top 10 water parks, better than Wet'n did Wild, his first try (number 11 in 2016 with 1.3 million visitors).

For aficionados, the birth of Volcano Bay mainly meant the last session of Wet'n Wild on December 31st. After 40 seasons of operation, the mythical Orlando Park, bought by Universal in 1998 from its founder George Millay, is already a memory. In September 1980, photographer Joel Sternfeld, who travels the United States aboard his Volkswagen combi, puts his tripod in front of his wave pool. The cliché is the cover of his American Prospects , become a classic of American photography."The concept of Wet'n Wild, the first water park in the world, was more of an innovation than an invention. George was the first to put water-based entertainment into one environment, put a fence around it, and charge an entrance ticket , " says The Wave Maker Tim O'Brien, the biographer of George Millay. If Millay did not have the genius of Walt Disney, he remains considered the father of these attractions. From San Diego, on the shores of the Pacific, he had, a few years earlier, created SeaWorld, a concept of wildlife park today decried.

In the 80s, like fast food restaurants, rollers or disco, water parks cross the Atlantic. And since it takes a legend, it is, it is said, an American, sensing that his domestic market is already too crowded, which offers the General Company of Guy Dejouany waters and Paribas to develop in Europe. The first Aqualand was created in Cap d'Agde in 1983. In 1996, Jean-Marie Messier sold Aqualand to the bank Worms, associated with Caisse des Dépôts and Spie Batignolles. The whole thing is sold three years later to the Spanish Aspro-Ocio, who still owns it today. But the European market has also developed in cooler latitudes (Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark ...) with "indoor" parks (like Aquaboulevard in Paris or Tropical Islands, not far from Berlin)."The park offers a wealth of new sensations, gliding pleasure, the search for emotions in the extreme leisure , " writes Isabelle Marc of CREC. Extreme but not too risky: "We play to be scared." More and more afraid, all the same: the managers, to bring back their customers and especially young adults, invest in new toboggans ever faster or dizzying .

A handful of companies around the world manufacture these long plastic structures, including the Turkish TNTY Waterparks. This family-owned company, founded forty years ago to manufacture fiberglass, now competes with industry leaders, the Canadian WhiteWater and ProSlide. Architect of training, the founder, Enver Pakis, passed the hand to his three sons. "We started working for Germany and the German-speaking countries like Switzerland and Austria, which forced us to be very serious about safety and technology"explains Sohret Pakis, who is married to the new president and marketing director of the company. From the shores of the Black Sea to Asia via Europe, TNTY works in a hundred countries, with two advantages: a central geographic position, and especially very competitive prices. The big SME, which produces its toboggans in Dilovasi, 80 km south of Istanbul, has not won the market of Volcano Bay - won by the Canadian ProSlide - but it has raised its colors on Harmony of the Seas , the largest cruise liner in the world, inaugurated last year.

Video game way attractions

To stay one step ahead, manufacturers and park operators are now looking for inspiration in video games. In the spring, the Canadian WhiteWater received one of the prestigious Thea Awards, which recognizes the best achievements of the theme parks, in the technology category. Principle of the award-winning attraction: Reaching targets when descending on buoys, which creates competition between players. As the objective is still, above all, to turn the turnover, the operators also push the services "cashless" and "fast pass." In Volcano Bay, a bracelet called TapuTapu can pre-preserve its next attraction to avoid queues, open your locker locker and connect you to your credit card.

The story does not tell if the Waturi tribe will continue their journey on the Pacific to the Asian coast, but in just ten years, China has understood all the codes of the water park and its declensions, the electro concert to the shows great show. Attendance at water parks in Asia (South Korea, Thailand, Japan ...) has now exceeded that of North America, and the continent has no less than seven facilities in the top 20 worldwide. The first place goes to the Chimelong water park in Canton, with 2.35 million visitors last year. It was designed by Canadians WhiteWater and Forrec, who see the full potential of a market boosted by a young population and a middle class eager for entertainment. But Asia does not is no longer a land of easy conquest for Western operators of medium size. A few years ago, the Spanish Aspro-Ocio, which owns about forty parks in Europe, imagined that it would allow it to double its turnover within five years. Nothing like it happened."We always look, but large Chinese companies have invested in leisure and do not expect us , " recognizes Michel Moenner.

Water parks, on the other hand, continue to interest photographers. Last year, Seph Lawless shot the Disney River Country in Orlando's wetlands, where nature has taken over a 15-year-old abandoned site. Strategically placed, Wet'n Wild, still owned by Universal, will not suffer the same fate. A big real estate project is already in the boxes.

WATERPARKS: Splash Cabin Debuts At Aquafantasy

Splash Cabin allows two players to engage in a water battle with animated competitors using an interactive screen. Guests play from inside a beach-bungalow-style cabin and score points by hitting moving targets while trying to avoid being hit themselves by waterjets shooting from screen-embedded nozzles. Players earn points for hitting targets, and the loser is doused with a water-splash surprise.

It is a wet version of Lagotronic’s GameCabIN, and TNTY Waterparks is the exclusive seller of the attraction. With a modular design and small footprint – 3.8 meters long x 5.8 meters high x 3.6 meters wide (12.5 feet long x 19 feet high x 12 feet wide ), the hut fits into a variety of entertainment and leisure facilities’ operations.

TNTY partnered with Lagotronics (Venlo, Netherlands), a specialty firm that creates state-of-the-art technology and innovative solutions and has also lined up other projects that include interactive dark rivers, virtual-reality waterslides and VR waterslide gaming.

Muharrem Atilla, manager of Aquafantasy, said: “Offering breakthrough attractions is the norm for our park, which is one of the largest in Turkey. But the Splash Cabin is a completely new attraction, even for us. It combines so many elements that deliver guest satisfaction. Multiple guests can play simultaneously, the queues move quickly due to the limited game timing, and they can even share their experiences on social media, which expands exposure of the attraction to potential new fans who aren’t even at the park.”

Features:
  • More fun and excitement than similar 3D shooting games
  • The ability for two guests to play simultaneously
  • A realistic 3D experience produced by two LED projectors
  • 2 robust water shooters designed to deliver long, problem-free user time
  • Requirement of only one computer with plug-and-play architecture for game control

Is VR the Next Big Thing in Waterparks?

Roller coasters at theme parks around the world have afforded riders the opportunity to soar alongside Superman, ride Santa’s sleigh and thwart alien invasions through virtual reality. Now waterparks are getting in on the action.

The Legends of Aqua, part of the Land of Legends megaresort in Antalya, Turkey, is the first waterpark to introduce a VR overlay of a family raft ride, transforming it into an immersive 3-D journey through the lost city of Atlantis.

Take a sneak peek at the VR overlay at the Legends of Aqua, part of the Land of Legends megaresort in Antalya, Turkey,

Equipped with a waterproof headset, guests can explore otherworldly ruins of the mythological city while spiraling down the slide. The 360-degree action in Atlantis synchs with the real-life thrills of speeding down chutes and bending around curves, thanks to a radio-wave system that tracks the rider’s location.

Turkey-based TNTY Waterparks and Polymorph Software in France developed Splash VR, the gear that makes it possible to experience other worlds on water-based rides.

Expect the VR treatment at other waterparks. Company officials tout the tech as an easy way to upgrade any slide with no major retrofits.

Aqua Fantasy new with world's first 'Splash Cabin'

A combination of video game and water battle promises the "Splash Cabin" - a new attraction that combines water fun with fun. The Turkish aqua park Aqua Fantasy is now the world's first amusement park with the water feature created by TNTY Waterparks and Lagotronics Projects.

Last year, the Turkish water slide manufacturer TNTY Waterparks, together with the Dutch cooperation partner Lagotronics Projects, presented the "Splash Cabin" at the IAAPA Attractions Expo 2016 in Orlando ( we reported ). Now the first delivery of the model, which promises lively water cannon action, takes place at the Turkish aqua park Aqua Fantasy in Izmir.

The idea of the "Splash Cabin" was developed by Lagotronics Projects together with TNTY Waterparks from the "Game Cabin". The new model allows a fun water feature for two people, who - equipped with 3D glasses - with water cannons on a screen, on the meantime, an adventurous film with matching theming can be seen firing.

It is important to catch as many moving targets as possible with the water jet. The special feature: Depending on how accurate the players are, it can happen that they are made wet by the characters themselves. Because the screen is equipped with nozzles that can spray back. A score at the end of the game shows how skillfully the individual player dealt with the water cannon. By the way: The loser of the duel can adjust to a wet surprise at the end of the game.

Ujevara Resort Debuts Largest Waterpark in Kosovo

Dilovasi/Kocaeli, 22.08.2017 (lifePR) - Traveling from the city off Ferizaj, Kosovo, the view changes from tall spires and historic edifices into one of lush, green fields and forests. Before long, however, colorful swirls rise from the pastures. The Ujevara Resort comes into sight with shimmering pools of liquid relief, multihued, intertwined waterslide tubes and cobalt-blue umbrellas. You've arrived at the newest - and largest - waterpark in the country.

Encompassing 20,000 square meters (215,278 square feet), the aqua park at Ujevara Resort is part of a growing trend in the Balkans. The number of waterparks in the region remains small compared to other parts of the world - nearby Serbia boasts less than half a dozen, and Albania has few to speak of. But TNTY Waterparks (Turkey) has dedicated wide resources to developing the area. In addition to being the designer and developer of the Ujevara Resort, for example, TNTY Waterparks led some waterpark projects in Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Slovenia.

Kubilay Alpdogan, Director of Sales and Design of TNTY Waterparks, says that the area is rich with opportunity. "We've been working in the Mediterranean for many years with successful projects in Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Egypt and smaller countries. So it's good to see the number of waterparks beginning to open in the Balkans specifically. We're focusing on helping developers in these areas create oases that blend relaxation and recreation."

The Ujevara Resort, which opened in June, offers a mix of attractions for all ages. Adults will enjoy TNTY's Multislide, Black Hole, Body Slide, Space Hole, Aquatube, Kamikaze, Freefall, Rafting Slide and Wave Slide. Kids will delight in the company's smaller versions of the Multi Slide, Aquatube and Compact Slide, along with a Mini Pirate Ship, Baby Octopus Slide, Rabbit Slide, Frog Slide, Mushroom and Octopus Slide.

Afrim Hoxha, partner of the Ujevara resort, says guests have provided a lot of positive feedback from their visits. "I've heard comments ranging from 'Just amazing!' and 'Wonderful!' to 'Fantastic,' along with general compliments about our facility. Working with the team at TNTY Waterparks allowed us to create a resort that people love. We're very pleased with the entire experience."

New Waterpark Is Heaven Sent

An 800-year-old church in Coventry will soon be accompanied by a brand new waterpark, as plans to fi t six water slides intricately next to the 13th century spire have been revealed.

FaulknerBrowns Architects fulfilled the requirements of the historic £36.7 million undertaking at the Coventry City Centre Leisure Park, while TNTY Waterparks have been chosen as the waterslide supplier. Other key contributors to the project include the main supplier and construction firm the Buckingham Group Contracting and consultant Neuman Aqua. Set to open in late 2018 or early 2019, the project has required many special considerations.

Bilge Pakis, Design Manager at TNTY Waterparks comments: “It is a game-changer in its distinctive design, required to fit the facility into a very tight footprint on a site where Franciscan monks originally constructed a cruciform-shaped church in the early 1200s.” The new facility will also provide a 25m swimming pool, a feature which will alter the layout of the waterpark. TNTY Waterparks Senior Architect Zeynep Canbaz said: “The floorplan ultimately put the waterslides on the third floor, an especially unusual proposal.

“That meant TNTY needed to specially adapt its rides to fi t within the specific limitations of the building’s mostly round layout and its constricting ceiling height. It wasn’t an easy design. “But it was incredibly fun to work on. It was challenging yet exciting to see the puzzle pieces of the slides match the required size needs and, finally, fi t perfectly within the restrictions of the facility.”

For 6th Consecutive Year, Waterparks Honored With European Star Award

This year, the prizes were bestowed in the categories of “Europe’s Best Waterslides” and “Europe’s Best Waterparks.” TNTY received the recognition at this year’s Euro Attractions Show (EAS) during a special ceremony on Sept. 25 at the Columbia Theatre in Berlin, Germany. The event took place the evening before the official kick-off of EAS, the largest attractions exhibition in the amusement industry.

With an expansive footprint, the EAS show floor boasts more than 500 exhibiting companies from around the world, representing more than 130 product categories. As the foundation of the EAS, 2017’s trade show floor offers attendees the chance to gain a first look at some of the up-and-coming products, services and technologies in the industry.

Park operators and manufacturers were awarded their prizes personally after an independent, international trade jury voted for and ranked the most remarkable attractions, waterslides, rollercoasters and theme parks in Europe. Awardees were recognized for entrepreneurial courage and exceptional innovations within the European theme park industry. The prizes are considered a rare distinction for attraction designers and theme parks, proving their exceptional achievements.

Of particular note regarding this year’s event, TNTY’s innovative King Cobra waterslide earned an award for the fourth time in six years. This year’s recognition was as the First Place European Star Award for the “Best Waterslide in Europe” category.

King Cobra’s accolades

King Cobra has won numerous awards since its debut. The waterslide is unique in its thrilling ride. As a whole, however, it is considered a game-changing waterslide because of its compelling appearance; it is the first in the world that offers its own theming built directly into the fiberglass. When installed with its original theme, it features bold red, black and white scales that create an imposing veneer over both its exterior and interior. Its sheer size also gains respect: It reaches a massive height of 50 feet (15.24 meters) with a length of 260 feet (790 meters). Yet, parks have many options with the impressive slide, because it can also be designed to match a park’s own theming, being customized with unending variations.

High tech. In Mongermont, Polymorph develops 2 global innovations

The company

In 2017, Polymorph is celebrating its 15th birthday. A big year, which sees the culmination of two creations: one in the field of service and industry, and the other in the entertainment sector.

In cooperation with the company Asterion VR - a start-up created only a year and a half ago - a new application has been developed, with the realization of platforms of variable dimensions: from 3 X 3 m to 6 X 4 m , allowing a person to move in space "in physical reality, in a virtual reality environment," says Fabrice Guichard, the director.

Find our Innovation section

Two versions exist: one in the form of entertainment, present in a dozen countries in the world, and the other military, already adopted by the special forces of Peru, Vietnam, Algeria, India, and currently being negotiated in France with the GIGN (National Gendarmerie Intervention Group, Ed) , the Raid and Marine Commandos, "said Erik Geslin, of Asterion.

Virtual reality

The second creation is currently applied in an Aquaparc in Switzerland and in a Land of Legend in Turkey. The technological feat is to float a toboggan in a water park, equipped with a virtual reality helmet, to see a 360 ° film. "This gives an exceptional sensation, a loss of reference, it is undoubtedly the new generation of slides," says Jerome Foucher, who directs the technical part.

The first film made possible to immerse the person in an underwater world "our innovation is present recently, at the water park of TNTY Waterparks in Turkey".

Waterpark Manufacturers Bring Home Brass Rings

Waterpark Manufacturers Bring Home Brass Rings
Winners were presented with the prestigious industry award at the 2017 IAAPA Expo

Aquatic Development Group

Brass Ring Awards are an annual tradition at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo. Awards are given as an honor to exhibitors and attendees for excellence in the attractions industry. There was a strong showing, once again, this year from the aquatics side. Winners were presented with the award during the Expo in Orlando, Fla.

The awards are named after an amusement industry custom dating back to the 1800s. Rings made of iron and brass were suspended above carousel riders at varying heights, low enough for them to grab, but high enough to be challenging. Snatching a brass ring was considered an accomplishment, since there were many iron rings and only a few brass rings. Riders who were skilled enough to grab brass could be rewarded with a prize or a free carousel ride.

This year's recipients from aquatics include:

TNTY Waterparks

Splash VR provides virtual-reality experience for waterpark guests without any modifications to the structure of existing water slides. Guests put on the wireless, waterproof headset to experience a journey, such as exploring the Lost City of Atlantis. The headset senses user location in order to unfold the story.

Prism is the next generation in accesso’s wearable device technology. It eliminates the need for ride reservation at kiosks. Users can hold a place in the virtual queue from the wristband’s touch screen menu. The device can also keep track of entry, payments, message receipt, locker rental, and tagging of ride and park photographs throughout the visit.

NEW INDIAN WATERPARK FEATURES

The multi-million-dollar development by the Rajgreen Group will eventually cover a 6.5 hectares site in the fast growing north west Indian city and, when complete, will offer a large family entertainment centre, indoor amusement park, bird park, snow park, shopping mall and cinema as well as hospitality, conference and events facilities.

Opened just before Christmas, the waterpark, the first phase of the development features a variety of extreme and family waterslides, combination slides, a children's water play structure and a wave pool.

TNTY’s signature King Cobra waterslide is at the centre of the brightly coloured waterpark, which is themed like a rainforest and filled with a wide variety of animal replicas, including lions, elephants, koala bears, polar bears and water buffalo.

The waterpark can accommodate up to 3,000 visitors daily and, along with the King Cobra, also offers the largest wave pool in the region.

On the ground development is being managed by international thematic entertainment design and construction corporation the Sanderson Group - first set up in Australia but now headquarted in Malaysia. The firm is recognised for successfully delivering projects for entertainment giants such as Disney, Universal Studios, DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, Sea World, Ripley's, Chimelong, Meraas, Village Roadshow and Fox Studios.
